Japan Suiso Energy, Ltd. (JSE) was established in June 2021 for the primary purpose of researching, planning, operating, and investing in a global supply chain for liquefied hydrogen.

Hydrogen is an indispensable energy source for achieving a decarbonized society. However, simply producing hydrogen is not, in itself, enough to contribute to society. Its value is realized only when it is put to use, in large volumes and reliably. A liquefied hydrogen supply chain is essential to making that possible.

To establish such a supply chain, JSE is currently implementing a commercialization demonstration as part of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) Green Innovation Fund Project “Large-scale Hydrogen Supply Chain Establishment.”

The development of various facilities and infrastructure for the demonstration, including the liquefied hydrogen terminal, the liquefied hydrogen carrier, and the pipeline, is proceeding steadily. A liquefied hydrogen supply chain that had previously existed only as a concept is now becoming a reality.

Through the commercialization demonstration and initiatives to put liquefied hydrogen to use across society, JSE will continue to tackle the challenge of building this supply chain, thereby contributing to a decarbonized society, a stable supply of energy, and the enhanced competitiveness of Japanese industry.

From 2030 onward, we aim to import liquefied hydrogen procured from overseas to Japan via liquefied hydrogen carriers, receive and store it at the Kawasaki LH2 Terminal, and establish a commercial-scale international liquefied hydrogen supply chain.

Subsequently, we aim to expand the scale of the supply chain in line with growing hydrogen demand by increasing supply capacity and diversifying hydrogen procurement sources.

Liquefied Hydrogen Supply Chain Commercialization Demonstration

Liquefied Hydrogen Supply Chain
Commercialization Demonstration

This demonstration project is being conducted with the following objectives:

  • To verify the necessary requirements for commercialization across the entire supply chain, from upstream to downstream, including the performance, safety, durability, reliability, and economic viability of the demonstration system, and to confirm the feasibility of achieving a hydrogen supply cost of 30 yen/Nm³ in 2030 at the point of arrival in Japan.
  • To support the social implementation of hydrogen through demonstration testing.

In FY2023, we originally planned to procure hydrogen from overseas. However, in FY2024, we revised our plans and decided to source hydrogen gas produced in Japan. This domestically procured hydrogen gas will be transported via pipeline to a facility that we plan to construct in Ohgishima, Kawasaki City. We have named this facility the “Kawasaki LH2 Terminal.”
The hydrogen gas delivered to the Kawasaki LH2 Terminal will be cooled to minus 253 degrees Celsius and liquefied, which will compress its volume to 1/800 of its original size and enable large-scale storage and transportation. The liquefied hydrogen will then be loaded onto a liquefied hydrogen carrier for demonstration testing under open ocean conditions, simulating international maritime transport.
